Please visit our new website by clicking on the following link: Electronic Signs have been developing over a number of years to the point that there are now a number of devices available that can be of great assistance to those who have difficulty in using conventional way finding schemes. MK Design are the JMU Access Partnership's distribuors for the RNIB React and InfraVoice systems.
The InfraVoice Infra-Red(IR) location and guidance system consists of two components which form two ends of an IR information link. These components are called the transmitter and the receiver
Transmitter The transmitter takes the form of either four seperate pods or a hemispherical dome that may be ceiling or wall mounted. The four individual transmitters allow for the transmission of four simultaneous and different messages, in four different directions, as in the four points of the compass. ie. to cover a crossroads. If all four transmitters are pointing in one direction then we have a significant increase of range and beam-width. Obviously intermediate combinations are available to suit other requirements. An individual transmitter consists of an array of IR diodes whose number vary the range of the transmitter. Four different types of array give a variable range from 4 to 12 metres and beam-widths in the range of 1.5 to 5 metres can be accommodated. The messages are pre-recorded and stored within the unit. The messages may be updated by the "downloading" of a new message from a portable PC via a download lead using Windows Infra Link Software. A message length of 32 seconds of high quality speech is possible. The networked version allows up to 256 individual transmitters to be connected to a PC driven network to allow the central downloading of new messages using Windows Infra Net software. This feature could be particularly valuable for frequently changed promotional information.
Receiver The receiver is a battery powered, palm sized unit, that is normally carried around the neck on an adjustable chain. The audio output is heard through an "off the ear" ear-piece, or through a small built in or lapel speaker. On/off and volume controls are provided as well as a power on audible indicator. Because the transmitter and receiver are directional, the user will only receive the message from the direction that they are facing. Thus, very specific directions, may be given to orientate the user and guide them in the intended direction. The internal re-chargeable battery is re-charged via an external charger and the battery life is about 4 hours between charges.
Allied to the launch of the new transmitter will be the facility for the receiver to handle two channels of information. Thus, the user, having being guided to a location, will then be able to receive specific information relevent to that location. ie a bus shelter followed by a bus timetable.
